Photos and descriptions of Nightime Telescope Observation of the Moon and Jupiter at Parkland High School.

Nighttime Telescope Observation of Moon and Jupiter, Fall 2012
Parkland High School, Academic Year 2012-2013
Grades 10-12
On the evening of November 19, 2012, Mrs. Weidenhammer's Astronomy class enjoyed a night telescope observation session provided by Gary DeLeo. The Moon and Jupiter were viewed through telescopes set up in the athletic-wing parking lot. Here are some photos of that event.

It was a beautiful evening. The sun had just set when Dr. DeLeo and Mrs. Weidenhammer arrived to set up the telescopes. The photo on the left shows approximately how the Moon appeared that evening.

Mrs. Weidenhammer helped us find Jupiter and other celestial objects. We were very excited! Mrs. Weidenhammer and Dr. DeLeo brought three telescopes: a Schmidt-Cassegrain, a Dobsonian-mounted Newtonian reflector, and a equitorial-mounted Newtonian reflector.

Photos of the observation session are shown on the left and below. Some parents, other teachers, and friends were also present and enjoying the view. Some students took photos of the moon through their smart phones. Dr. DeLeo said that he would place some of them on this website if they e-mail them to him (hint hint).

Here is a group photo, taken under a street light.

The Moon seemed particular close on that enchanted evening, and even the stars seemed to favor Parkland High School!
