Photos, video, and descriptions of Nightime Telescope Observation of the Moon and Jupiter at Parkland High School.

Nighttime Telescope Observation of Moon and Jupiter, Fall 2010
Parkland High School, Academic Year 2010-2011
Grades 11, 12
On the evening of Nov. 10, 2010, Mrs. Weidenhammer's Astronomy classes enjoyed a night telescope observation session provided by Gary DeLeo. The Moon and Jupiter were viewed through a telescope set up in the athletic-wing parking lot. Here are some photos of that event.

It was a beautiful evening. The sun had just set when Dr. DeLeo and Mrs. Weidenhammer arrived to set up the telescope. When it got dark, Dr. DeLeo took a photo of the Moon through his camera, without using a telescope. That photo is shown just to the left.
Mrs. Weidenhammer was the first to look through the telescope as students pointed out the direction of Jupiter. Perhaps she wanted to make sure looking through the telescope was safe before allowing the students to look. Dr. DeLeo set up a laptop computer in his car, running a simulation showing Jupiter and its moons.
The simulation helped us to identify the four major moons of Jupiter, Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. These are called the "Galilean" satellites.

Photos of the observation session are shown on the right and below. Some parents were also present and enjoying the view.
Immediately to the right is a VIDEO of us around the telescope. Click the play button on the image. On the far right is a group photo of us by the telescope.

A photo of us gathered around the telescope while it was pointing at the Moon is shown on the left.

The Moon seemed particularly close on that enchanted evening!
