Cameras, Pictures, and Vision

Dr. DeLeo came into Mrs. Werkheiser's Academic Integration (AI) classes to tell us about vision, cameras, and photographs. He brought in some old-style film cameras so we could see what they look like inside, and see how they work. |

| We saw how the lens opening could be made bigger and smaller (aperture; shown just to the right) and how the amount of time the shutter remained open could be changed (shutter speed; far right). We saw how changing these made the picture too bright, too dark, or just right. |
|

|

Dr. DeLeo told us that digital cameras could actually see light that the human eye cannot see, but a special filter in the camera prevents it. This light is called infrared light.

|
| Dr. DeLeo and some of his students removed the filter from an old camera so it could see infrared light. He aimed it at a TV remote control and pressed one of the buttons. Although we could not see the light that tells the TV to change channels with our eyes, the camera (without the filter) could see it! |

| Dr. DeLeo gave us 3d glasses so we could view 3d pictures that he projected on the screen. He even showed us some 3d pictures that he made, like those on the right. |

We did lots of other things as well, like examining optical illusions. Dr. DeLeo took photos of us and said he was going to make 3d pictures of our classes. He told us about free software that you can use to make 3d photos. Dr. DeLeo uses free software he got from the website...
