How Cameras Work
Miller Heights Elementary School, Academic Year 2010-2011
Grades 4 and 5
Dr. DeLeo came into Mrs. Werkheiser's Academic Integration (AI) classes to tell us how cameras work. He brought in some old-style film cameras so we could see what they look like inside, and see how they work.
Dr. DeLeo showed us how cameras, even digital cameras, control the amount of light that reaches the film, or the detector in a digital camera. We saw how the lens opening could be made bigger and smaller (aperture) and how the amount of time the shutter remained open could be changed (shutter speed). We saw how changing these made the picture too bright, too dark, or just right.

We learned lots of other things as well, including how to make small things look big, and how to make 3d photos. Dr. DeLeo told us about free software that you can use to make 3d photos. Here is the website...

I hope you have enjoyed this web presentation as much as we enjoyed sharing the actual learning experience with your son or daughter. Although we have endeavored to exclude photographs where permission has been denied, it is possible for errors to occur. If you would like us to remove a photograph of your son or daughter for any reason, please send me an e-mail message at lgd0@lehigh.edu or call me at 610-758-3413, and we will remove it promptly. Please note that we will never associate a child's full or last name with a photograph except in circumstances where special permission was explicitly provided. Thank you. Gary DeLeo.
